Better water quality in open sea pens – with SPA (Sea Pen Aeration) from Pentair VAKI
Fish farming in open sea pens presents a number of challenges, several of which can be easily solved by lifting clean and oxygen-rich water into the pen and higher up in the water column.
This complete system makes controlled circulation simple.
Areas of use: When using a lice skirt – in the case of low or fluctuating oxygen levels in the pens – when experiencing periodic problems with algae, plankton or large numbers of particles – in the case of (too) high or low surface temperatures – and in order to prevent ice formation in the pen.
A balanced airflow system and specially developed diffusers produce air bubbles of an optimal size to move a volume of water; and thus oxygen-rich, fresh water to the fish.

The diffusers in the SPA system are located in a circular diffuser platform: specially developed to control the movement of water in the pen.
The robust diffusers are made of rubber – and provide good control over the amount of air processed through the system at any time. All parts that are prone to wear and tear are mounted such that they can be replaced easily with a minimal use of tools.
Developed over many years
The SPA water lifter is the result of development co-operation with international aquaculture companies since 2013. Systems have already been supplied – or are on order – to both large and small players world-wide.
A complete system
An advanced control unit ensures that the SPA system provides a balanced distribution of air in the system, with individual control options for each sea pen. The airflow to one or more pens can be adjusted without affecting the airflow to the other pens. Each individual diffuser platform is also balanced in relation to the airflow.
Tailor-made compressor solutions
Pentair VAKI has secured a global contract with Kaeser for the supply of compressors for the SPA system. The system is optimised for minimal energy use. The focus is on energy saving, system optimisation, system design – and the provision of the correct amount of air for each individual sea pen (note that it is of course also possible to use existing generator sets).
Permanent installations – better control
We recommend permanent installation of SPA in the pens. Permanent systems have the advantage that they are always available to improve conditions in the pens, and there is no need to carry out time-consuming operations to move equipment when time is of the essence. Equipment that is always in operation is also easier to operate for new users. SPA is designed to minimise the danger of equipment interfering with nets and other equipment when it is necessary to move the installations.
The details count
Pentair VAKI has focused not only on lifting water higher up in the pen, but also on looking at the flow patterns when using different diffusers – and their respective positioning. This was done by carrying out liquid dynamics studies – combined with full-scale fish farm trials.
The testing made it possible to choose the right diffusers, with the correct positioning – and the optimal amount of air and pressure.
The result? Simple, controlled movement of water in order to achieve an optimal environment.
Easy control – integrated data collection
Our sensory package «Point4» provides the necessary information for you to be able to adjust optimal water replacement while maintaining control over the water quality.
SPA is easy to control and calibrate, and the sensory package makes it possible to systemise environmental data from your sea pens, locally, nationally or internationally – using the cloud service «PenVault». This is not a pre-requisite for using the system, but it provides many advantages.
